In the process of choosing fish for your aquarium, there are various things that must be thought of. Fact is, a number of aquarium hobbyists are designing their aquarium revolving a particular environment or they chose a specific fish group. To give you an example, you may go for a biotope tank that uses species native to Amazon River and fill your tank to water parameters that are found naturally in that environment.

One thing that most aquarists don’t think when they are stocking aquariums & tanks is the color. If you wish to have the most colorful and brightest tank as possible, then you should consider choosing the fish by its color.

In most cases, fish for freshwater aquarium isn’t as bright as their tropical saltwater fish counterpart. However, there are beautiful specimens out there that you can opt for. In the next paragraphs, you’re going to find brief overview of the most colorful species of freshwater fish grouped by their color.

Blue

This is a typical color among saltwater tropical fish but, there are other freshwater fish that exhibits brilliant blue and bold hues. Many of the betta fish for instance is exhibiting deep blue colorations and there are numerous blue cichlid species too. Another example is the German blue ram which is a smaller cichlid species with bright blue spots around its body. Again, you have plenty of options so don’t restrict yourself to what you see.

Red

Most freshwater aquarium fish is available in different shades of red like betta fish, guppies, the discus, swordtails and different cichlids. Red wag swordtail is actually a peaceful community of fish and livebearer meaning, it bears live and fully formed young rather than laying eggs.

These fish can grow to a max of 4 inches in length and at the same time, has this dark and deep red color. Oftentimes, they have black on their fins as well.

Green

Green isn’t among the common colors that you can find in an aquarium but there are fish species that have such coloration. For example, green tiger barb is one of the color variant of tiger barb which is well known for its striped pattern. Green tiger barb as the name suggests has emerald green tint to its body along with a fluorescent sheen.
